The John Lennon Encyclopedia
Published in Paperback by Virgin Publishing (October, 2001)
Author: Bill Harry
Average review score:

The ultimate book on the magnificent John
Everything Bill Harry publishes on the Beatles is always a high quality, well-researched effort and this is no exception. It's not hyperbole to say that this book contains virtually everything you ever wanted to know about Lennon; the details are prodigious, and it spans over 1,000 pages of text. It's an almost day by day chronicle of Lennon's life from 1940 until his tragic death in 1980. Casual fans might suffocate under the weight of all this info, but for Lennon fanatics, like me, this is nirvana.

The book is equally divided between personal material about John, his relationships, marriages, divorce, and two sons, and his professional career. His partnership with Paul is explored in exhaustive and fascinating detail and no discernible bias can be seen. Bill Harry has written about all of the Beatles but one can never tell which one is his favorite. That's a notable strength in his writing, he has no agenda or axe to grind, he just presents the glorious facts of the Fab Four. The index is easy to follow and cross-referenced so you can easily find what you're looking for.

If you are a serious fan of John Lennon, this is an indispensible guide to his songwriting, personality and his life. If only he had been allowed more than 40 years on earth, how many more classic songs would he have written? Sadly, we will never know, but this celebration of his life is as good as it gets.

Johnny Thunder: in Cold Blood
Published in Paperback by Omnibus Press (31 December, 1988)
Author: Nina Guiodio
Average review score:

Johnny Thunders, The Man Behind the Myth
A must-read for any fan of Thunders, The New York Dolls, punk, and good old rock and roll. It's easy to see the influence Thunders has had on music, style, and attitude. Nina's exhaustive research, first-person interviews and genuine love of detail create a rich tapestry of the life of the man behind the myth. Unflinching yet respectful, this book avoids the tabloid feel of most Thunders reads while never missing the good, bad, or ugly that Johnny brought upon himself and those around him. From his birth in Queens, New York, to his untimely death at the age of 38 in New Orleans, Johnny was an original. This book was authorised by Thunders himself and contains many rare photos and a full discography. Love Johnny, love this book! RR

Jokerman: Reading the Lyrics of Bob Dylan
Published in Hardcover by Blackwell Science Inc (September, 1988)
Author: Aidan Day
Average review score:

The only intelligent book on Dylan's lyrics
Uncompromisingly academic, this short but in-depth study of the notions of identity in Bob Dylan's lyrics would probably be inaccessible for anyone not in possession of an Eng Lit degree. A must for anyone with said degree and a Dylan collection.

Joris of the Rock (His the Neustrian Cycle : Book 2)
Published in Textbook Binding by Borgo Pr (June, 1980)
Author: Leslie Barringer
Average review score:

a prequel and a sequel
Covering much of the same historical span as Gerfalcon, Joris begins before and ends after the earlier novel. Like Gerfalcon, Joris is written with an eye toward verisimilitude. This is not candy-fantasy. Characters are tight and clearly motivated, and the writing follows suit with an elegance rarely seen in contemporary fantasy. I consider it a crime that Barringer's Neustrian Cycle has languished out of print since the late '70s. This is one of those rare novels one can both read for pure enjoyment and still learn something from.

Kansas Geology: An Introduction to Landscapes, Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils
Published in Paperback by Univ Pr of Kansas (May, 1984)
Author: Rex Buchanan
Average review score:

Kansas Geology -- A useful travel companion
A cursory reading of this book should lay to rest any lingering prejudice that Kansas is a flat, boring state.

The book is well organized, and and easy to read, with a minimum of scientific jargon, and where such jargon is needed, it is defined clearly.

The photographs are clear, and color is employed where appropriate.

Several authors contributed to this book, and it starts off with a general introduction to the geology and various land features of Kansas.

The next three chapters cover rocks, minerals, and fossils, respectively. Throughout these three chapters, history, natural history, and geology are interwoven in a particularly interesting narrative that left me with a greater understanding of why Kansas is the way it is, and how the geological history and modern times are related.

The final chapter consists of a mile by mile description of the geology of Interstate 70 as it passes through the state. The descriptions of the various sedimentary beds one sees in the road cuts were clear enough that we could see the formations as we cruised by at highway speeds. Driving back to Missouri from Colorado was an interesting trip back in time from the Quaternary through the Pennsylvanian periods.

My only criticism of this book is that there are other major routes through the state, and it would be nice to see a more southern route as well as north-south route descibed. But then, that would be more in the area of the "Roadside Geology of ______" series. This book is not really in the same category as the Roadside Geology series, but it is useful, nonetheless, and gives a far more complete view of the overall geology of the state.

Thumbs Up
This book isn't that well written, but I give it five stars because the author was on the scene when the Stones were recording the album SOME GIRLS in Paris. SOME GIRLS is my favorite Stones album, so to have fly-on-the-wall observations of its creation was a treat.
